Objectives of the Course The purpose of this course is to teach the fundamental theoretical and practical knowledge of video art. It aims to convey the social and technological factors that led to the emergence of video art and to guide students in creating critical and conceptual video art projects.
Course Content The course starts with learning the political rationales underlying the emergence of video art. They learn about the most important works of video art and the techniques for their scientific analysis. The aspects of video that distinguish it from film/cinema, as well as the place of time, space, and duration in video art, are discussed. The factors that determine aesthetic quality in video art, their functions, and the characteristics that distinguish video from other art forms are analyzed through examples. After the theoretical foundation is established, the students learn the basic technical knowledge necessary for video art production, along with some shooting, cutting, and editing methods, through explanatory videos and simple exercises in the following weeks.
As submission project, short (like a credits) videos are shot around a specific theme. Lighting and camera movements are experimented with. The videos are shared via social media.
Course Methods and Techniques To ensure the development of the project through presentation and criticism. Watching and discussing helpful videos on the subject.
