Objectives of the Course To provide students with knowledge about the definition, characteristics, and functions of language; to teach the place of Turkish among world languages and its historical development; to introduce the alphabets used by Turks throughout history; to develop an understanding of the phonological, morphological, and structural features of Turkish; and to enable students to use spelling rules and punctuation marks correctly and effectively.
Course Content The concept of language, definition and characteristics of language, the origin of languages, classification of world languages in terms of structure and origin, the place of Turkish among world languages, the historical development and periods of the Turkish language, alphabets used by Turks throughout history, classification of sounds, vowel and consonant harmony, sound changes, stress and intonation, spelling rules, punctuation marks, morphology, derivational suffixes, and inflectional suffixes.
